Physical Education
At Kingsmead Primary School we strongly believe that all children should have access to a thoroughly planned, progressive physical education programme, which places a real emphasis on developing a wide range of physical competences, while encouraging healthy competition and teamwork. Throughout their time at Kingsmead Primary School, we equip all children with the necessary skills, knowledge and range of physical experiences to motivate them to lead lifelong active, healthy lifestyles in which they continue their participation in physical activity and sport. We aim to give all children the opportunity to experience competitive sport by planning and participating in regular school-based events such as sports days and intra-school events. We also work closely alongside the Vale Royal School Sports Partnership (VRSSP) which provide us with the opportunity to participate in local or regional events that may be appropriate and available. In addition to this, we also aim to offer weekly sports clubs and activities where children can develop skills in sports or other physical activities in which they have a particular interest or expertise. We aim to ensure that all our children display the School Games sporting values of Passion, Self-Belief, Respect, Honesty, Determination and Teamwork.
EYFS: “PE makes your heart go faster”
Year 1: “PE keeps us healthy”
Year 2: “You must warm up when you do PE”
Our physical education curriculum is carefully planned to include a range of indoor and outdoor based lessons throughout the year and provides a varied and progressive learning programme. In Year 1-6, PE is discretely taught each week for 2 hours by the teacher with engaging, high quality and enjoyable physical education lessons. Teachers use a range of resources including Rising Stars PE planning resources to aid them in teaching high quality PE sessions each week, with a focus in progression of skills. As well as this, children also take part in other physical activities throughout the day such as ‘lap and back’ and active lessons. Appropriate provision is in place to support a range of learning needs and abilities and ensure positive outcomes for all children
In the Early Years children have one discrete lesson of PE a week and children have outside access to equipment that develops their gross motor skills to support with negotiating space, core strength and co-ordination - a key element of the ‘Physical Development’ strand of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum.
Children are given the opportunity to develop their PE skills further. We appoint Sports leaders in Year 6 and we train Phys Kids leaders in Year 6 to support structured games at lunchtimes to ensure purposeful physical activity is happening. Children are given the opportunity to attend sporting events and competitions that are outside the curriculum and we aim for all children to attend at least one a year.
The National Curriculum for Physical Education aims to ensure that all children:
develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
are physically active for sustained periods of time
engage in competitive sports and activities
lead healthy, active lives
Progression across Year Groups
Our PE lessons are planned using a range of resources including Rising Stars PE, which aligns with our core values, our whole child approach to PE and the objectives laid out in the National Curriculum. PE is planned so that progression is built into it, which ensures our children are increasingly challenged as they move up through the school.
In EYFS, physical development is a key focus and is taught through both discrete PE lessons and throughout the learning that takes place every day. Children progress their physical development by learning and understanding their own needs, negotiating space and moving freely in a way that is safe and appropriate, also mastering how to hold a pencil and developing their fine motor skills. Children will demonstrate good control and co-ordination which provides them with a secure foundation to move up to Key Stage 1.
In KS1, children utilise the control and co-ordination obtained in the Early Years and develop fundamental movement skills including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as further accessing and enhancing a broad range of balance, agility and co-ordination opportunities. Children work cooperatively in simple team games whilst recognising and applying rules to ensure games are fair. Children begin to participate in competitive activities.
In Lower Key Stage 2 children build on the core skills that have previously been developed and work on developing motifs and sequences developing strength, technique and flexibility. Children are taught to apply skills to to game situations. They apply and follow rules fairly and begin to vary the tactics and rules depending on the game situation.
In Upper Key Stage 2 children consolidate the core skills that they have been taught. They develop their own compositions and sequence these using a range of techniques. They perform moves with precision and ensure they are ‘performance’ ready. Children apply knowledge and understanding of rules and tactics to game situations. They create their own games with rules and lead others in playing these games. They evaluate their own and others work and ensure that they suggest thoughtful and appropriate improvements. Children are frequently provided with the opportunity to represent the school at competitive sporting events against other schools with the aim of all children attending at least one a year.
Our Beautiful Work
Year 3: “PE helps your body to be healthy”
Year 4: “I really enjoy PE lessons, it makes me feel happy”
Year 5: “I really enjoy learning all the different sports
We will be able to see that the children know more and remember more in PE, and therefore do more things, through evidence in their PE lessons and pupil voice. We will also see they are able to recall prior learning and apply it. Children will then start their next year of learning with the necessary skills and knowledge to build upon.
Children can confidently explain the importance of engaging in regular physical activity. A high percentage of children will have had the opportunity to participate in local competitions each year, promoting confidence.
Teachers will feel confident when teaching PE as a result of having the opportunity of any required training to work alongside a specialist PE teacher from a local high school and using high level planning to support their lessons.
With support at play times and lunch times from the Phys Kids leaders, children will have more purposeful lunchtimes.
Active lessons and the ‘Lap & Back’ will improve not only the children’s fitness, but also their attainment, mood, behaviour and general wellbeing.
Instilling the School Games Values will support children not only in their PE lessons but also across all other areas of the curriculum.
Through working alongside the VRSSP all children will be given the opportunity to take part in competitive sporting events against other schools.
If you were to walk into a PE lesson at Kingsmead you would see:
All children are engaged, challenged and working collaboratively whilst enjoying their PE lesson.
Each lesson has key skills that are taught and there is cumulative skills progression between and within lessons.

Year 6: “Lessons are fun and you get to laugh, they are active and fun”
