The Building

Picture of School

The design intention behind our school was to create a school that is an exemplar of sustainable design and construction. This ethos informs every aspect of the design from its orientation on the site, to the selection of natural materials, use of natural ventilation and day-lighting and the landscape concept. The building has a strong visible timber structure, which gives interest to the internal spaces and allows direct contact with this natural material, whilst each classroom has an uninterrupted view to green space.

Principles of sustainable construction are apparent at every level - from the base building design concepts of super-insulating and naturally venting through to the use of photovoltaics and solar hot water panels, rainwater harvesting for flushing toilets, SUDS (Sustainable Urban Water Drainage Systems), recycled materials, locally sourced products and labour and the use of a bio-mass boiler heating system.

These holistic, environmental design criteria, as well as minimising the building's own impact, enhance the use of space and connection with the natural environment, providing an exceptional place to learn, work and play.

You can find more information on the construction of our school on the website of the architects, White Design.
